The current Hoeksche Waard it was formed after the Sint Elisabeth flood of 1421, which flooded the area. This flood changed the watercourses in the area dramatically. Most dikes in the landscape were built between 1538 and 1653. In Mijnsheerenland you see an eighteenth-century mansion at the Court of Moerkerken. The history of the Hof van Moerkerken dates back to 1440, when the first artisan of the Belgian Moerkerke settled here. The house has traditionally been inhabited by the artisans.Around 1796 the building was renovated and it got its current appearance.Before World War II the house was used as a refugee shelter, after the war the building was used to house recovering tuberculosis patients.Since 2007, the Court of Moerkerken has been privately owned. It's under Monument care's supervision.
