During World War I soldiers often had to walk to the village, across the Fortlaan. The Fortlaan looked beautiful then, because left and right of the avenue were elm trees.
.The elm played an important role in the landscape of the Hoeksche Waard. These trees were frequently planted along roads and dikes, and contributed to the characteristic landscape of the region. Unfortunately, the elm disease, a fungal disease affecting the trees, has caused a lot of damage in recent years. The elms along the Fortlaan have also disappeared.
