A-huizen(A houses)

In 1970 the A houses were built in Westmaas. A then new, luxurious residential area with semi-detached houses on the water of the Binnenbedijkte Maas. When you see the houses, you get the name.The street name "Great Riethure" refers to the reed that once grew and the nature of the area: A thure. A thure or a gors, is a covered piece of land outside the dike. So this land was flooded.The Karthuizer monks made a dike around this place in 1439 - 1440. It flooded here only in winter, with very high water. Later the dikes were strengthened, raised and modernised.
