After the Second World War, there was late maintenance of many dikes in the Netherlands. This delayed maintenance contributed to the vulnerability of the dikes during the Water Emergency disaster of 1 February 1953.On that day, around 5 a.m., near the Schuringse Havenkade, 1,200 meters of the dike of the Dutch Deep broke through. A sea of water rushed into the polder. Four meters high, everything devastating. An incredible pool of water. Neighborhood Schuring was hit hard. Almost all homes on the Korte and Lange Boomweg washed away and 56 people drowned.
